Malta's bee population is projected to decline by at least 50% this year, releasing a cascade of consequences that will empty jars of locally produced honey and threaten the island's agricultural security. Beekeepers across Malta and Gozo are reporting what some describe as a "total massacre" of their colonies, with the damage so severe that whole apiaries have been abandoned by surviving bees — a defensive behavior that signals complete colony collapse. The full financial toll will only become clear in November, when keepers assess survival rates, but early indicators suggest 2026 may rival 2022, when Oriental hornets destroyed 70% of all Maltese beehives.

Honey production is expected to drop by half or more, meaning limited supply and higher prices for local varieties like wild thistle and carob honey.

A Predator Perfected by Climate

The Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) has haunted Maltese beekeepers for roughly 25 years, but the insect has found unlikely allies in the island's changing environment. Consistently hot summers — with temperatures pushing toward 42°C — extend the hornet's active season and accelerate its reproductive cycle. Each hornet colony now numbers approximately 1,000 individuals, and they are efficient hunters. A single colony can kill several bees daily, but the broader damage comes from harassment: hornets hovering near hive entrances prevent bees from foraging. Malnutrition and stress set in, and in extreme cases, bees abandon their hives entirely.

George Baldacchino, who manages 280 bee colonies, has been catching roughly 1,000 hornets daily at his apiary. The scale of that catch illustrates the problem — and the futility. Despite his efforts, hornets continue to overwhelm his colonies. Jonathan Tanti, another beekeeper, reported that his 50 colonies have been largely decimated, leaving him with almost no honey to harvest this season. He described the current situation as comparable to the devastating losses of 2022.

That year remains a grim benchmark. Beekeeper Mario Axisa lost 13 of his 15 hives, calling it a "massacre." Mark Psaila, secretary of the Malta Beekeepers Association, noted at the time that the following year's harvest would be negligible because keepers would have to focus on rebuilding colonies rather than producing honey. The psychological and financial toll on apiarists is compounded by the knowledge that the problem is recurring, not resolving.

The Response: Action Plans, Traps, and Research

TheMaltese government and civil society have not been idle. In February 2026, Phase 2 of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee (2026–2028) was launched, targeting threats from invasive species. The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee, instrumental in drafting the plan, has partnered with professional pest controllers for coordinated nest removal during peak summer months. Purpose-built hornet trap cages are now available to the public, not just beekeepers, in an effort to mobilize the wider community.

Research initiatives are also expanding. The BeeSustain project, launched in late 2025 by the University of Malta's Biodiversity and Ecology Research Group, is applying modern tools to an ancient problem: DNA tests for pollen, studies of bee gut bacteria, drone imagery, and weather data analysis. The goal is to understand the precise pressures on pollinators and develop practical solutions. The project aligns with the National Strategy and Action Plan for Pollinators (2035) and contributes to broader biodiversity commitments.

In July 2025, the government introduced a financial aid scheme for beekeepers in Malta and Gozo, co-funded by European and national funds. The scheme provides support for technical knowledge, disease control, and improved production methods. The Eco-Honey project, an EU-funded initiative promoting organic honey production, was also active through 2025, with its conclusion set for 2026.

Yet despite these measures, hornet populations surged again in 2025, and the 2026 season has been catastrophic. Experts stress that early intervention — targeting queen hornets in spring before colonies establish — is critical. Improving urban waste management is also essential, as organic waste attracts hornets and increases nesting sites in peri-urban areas.

What This Means for Residents

The immediate impact will be felt in the jar. Consumers seeking Maltese honey — prized for its distinct flavor profiles derived from wild thistle, carob, and citrus blossoms — should expect limited availability and higher prices. Beekeepers are prioritizing colony survival over harvest. Those who rely on local honey for its perceived health benefits or culinary qualities may need to adjust their sourcing or budgets.

Beyond the kitchen, the decline in pollinators threatens the broader ecosystem. Crop yields for Maltese farmers, already squeezed by water scarcity and land pressure, could suffer further. Residents with home gardens may notice poorer fruit sets on trees and reduced flowering. The Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) is an endemic subspecies, meaning it exists nowhere else on Earth. Its loss would be irreversible.

There is a role for the public. Reporting hornet sightings to local authorities or the University of Malta helps researchers track activity. Using professional pest removal services rather than amateur attempts reduces the risk of provoking aggression or harming beneficial species. The crisis is not abstract. It is playing out in apiaries across Malta and Gozo, where beekeepers are watching their livelihoods disappear under a swarm of predators.
