Sliema festa traffic paralysis prompts council coordination concerns

Road closures during Saturday's Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart celebrations in Sliema brought significant traffic disruption to the coastal town, with residents reporting extended delays navigating the affected area. The incident has reignited concerns about traffic planning coordination between parish organizers, enforcement authorities, and the Sliema Local Council.

The Traffic Disruption

Drivers attempting to navigate Sliema during Saturday evening's feast celebrations encountered heavy congestion, with some reporting it took considerably longer than usual to travel short distances. Road closures for the feast included Triq San Trofimu, Triq il-Karmnu, Triq Manwel Dimech, and Triq Sant'Elena, affecting much of the town center and forcing through-traffic onto alternative routes.

Local residents documented the gridlock on social media, with complaints about the lack of visible traffic management during peak evening hours.

Council Excluded from Planning

Sliema Local Council representatives have confirmed they were not included in advance traffic coordination meetings held before the feast, breaking established protocol where the council typically convenes stakeholders—feast committees, Transport Malta, the Malta Police Force, and Malta Public Transport—to coordinate traffic management measures.

The council's exclusion meant it had no input into diversion plans, closure timing, or enforcement personnel allocation. Local representatives argue their involvement is important because they possess knowledge of resident parking patterns, delivery schedules, and local traffic flow characteristics that can inform planning.

This marks the third major event in recent months where the council reports being excluded from final planning discussions, according to local officials.

Road Closures and Impact

The feast day closures covered significant portions of Sliema's central area, creating bottlenecks on remaining open routes. For residents and commuters, the disruption highlighted ongoing challenges in managing large events in the town, which has experienced substantial population growth and increased density in recent years.

Looking Ahead

The Sliema Local Council is pressing for inclusion in advance planning for upcoming feasts scheduled during the remainder of summer. Officials argue that coordinated planning between all stakeholders is essential for effective traffic management during these recurring events.
